Description
Through his years of service as director of the Office of Science and Technology, within the Executive Office of President George W. Bush, John Marburger had more than the customary opportunity to test the authority of science to govern political decisions. "... [In] my conversations with scientists and science policymakers," he writes in "Science's Uncertain Authority in Policy" (Issues, Summer 2010), "there is all too often an assumption that somehow science must rule, must trump all other sources of authority." Indeed, he cites three examples from his experience in the Bush administration when good science advice was (1) misinterpreted (anthrax in the mail), (2) overruled (the launch of the Challenger spacecraft), or (3) deliberately corrupted in the interest of making "the administrations case for war" in Iraq (aluminum tubes).
